The monsoon season brings much-needed
relief from the summer heat, but it also leads to a sharp rise in motor
insurance claims. Heavy rainfall, waterlogging, flooding, and poor visibility
increase the risk of accidents and vehicle damage. While insurance provides
financial protection, many claims are delayed or even rejected because vehicle
owners fail to take basic precautions or are unaware of their policy coverage.
One of the most important steps is to
ensure your vehicle is monsoon-ready. Check that the tyres have adequate tread,
the brakes are functioning properly, the wipers are in good condition, and all
lights are working. These simple checks improve road safety and reduce the
chances of accidents during heavy rain.
Parking your vehicle in a safe location
is equally important. Avoid parking in low-lying or flood-prone areas where
water can accumulate. Water entering the engine or electrical system can cause
extensive damage. Also, avoid parking under trees or near electric poles during
storms, as falling branches or live wires can severely damage your vehicle.
A common mistake motorist make is
attempting to drive through waterlogged roads. Besides posing a serious safety
risk, it can lead to engine damage if water enters the engine, a condition
known as hydrostatic lock and also
cranking attempt can lead to damage. If your vehicle stalls in water,
never attempt to restart it, as this can worsen the damage. Instead, contact
your insurer or roadside assistance provider and have the vehicle towed to an
authorised workshop. Restarting a water-damaged engine may also affect claim
admissibility if negligence is established.
During the monsoon, drive cautiously. Maintain
a safe distance from other vehicles, avoid sudden braking or overtaking, and
reduce speed, especially on roads with poor visibility. Rainwater often hides
potholes and open drains, making careful driving essential.
Equally important is understanding your
insurance policy. Review your motor insurance coverage and consider add-ons
such as Engine Protect Cover, Zero Depreciation Cover, and Roadside Assistance attime of policy purchase.
Finally, if your vehicle is damaged,
inform your insurer immediately and avoid undertaking repairs before the
surveyor's inspection unless specifically permitted.
The monsoon need not result in costly
repairs or claim disputes. With proper vehicle maintenance, safe driving
practices, timely claim reporting, and adequate insurance coverage, you can
protect both your vehicle and your finances throughout the rainy season.
